Enough is enough! Tommy has had 2-3 weeks of crazy high blood sugars. I keep increasing the rate, but it doesn't seem to make much of a difference. I am probably not being aggressive enough with the increases, but the lows that come every once in awhile scare me. Maybe he should put on his CGM!!!!

It has been awhile since I last posted. Just an update. Tommy is still on the 522 pump, but hasn't used the CGM part of it for what seems about 2 months. He used to wear it every couple of weeks just to get an idea of how his settings were going. He tried the new minilink transmitter when it came, but didn't seem too interested in it. I haven't pushed it yet.

He is now finishing 6th grade. He is almost a teenager! He is starting to worry about his clothes, his hair, his GIRLFRIEND!! Yikes! He asked me the other day about going back to shots. I told him that we were lucky to have the flexibility of having a CGM because if he ever wanted to go back to shots, all we would have to do is hook him up to the CGM while he was changing to Lantus. But I haven't heard any more about it. I am not going to push it.

I have sometimes bribed him to put in the sensor. It seems that usually once he has it on, it is not a problem. But agreeing to put it on is proving to be a little tricky. I have got to get him to wear it!!! These high blood sugars are scaring me!!!

I'll have to try something.

Jenny-

When are you seeing those highs? Is there a pattern?

Joseph's numbers have been creeping up lately between midnight and six in the morning. I've already increased his basal rate once. Will probably have to do it again.

I'm really thinking there's some hormonal stuff going on with these guys...

In the meantime, we've had the opposite issue during the day-- Joseph is having some nasty lows (40s and 50s).

We're giving him less insulin for meal boluses, and extra snacks (he's just so dang active), but he's still going low-- more so on warm days.

(I'm sure that rebounds from these lows are playing a part in at least some of the overnight highs we're seeing.)

Anyhow-- if you can convince Tommy to wear his CGM for a while, I'd be very interested to know if it helps you bring down those highs...

Sandra,
His highs are all the time except for the afternoon. I am going to turn up the basals again for the morning. We saw them climb fast this morning when he got up. It was an hour later than a school day. I am wondering if the high is dependent on when he actually starts moving for the day. Is it a hormone dump that starts when he wakes up. I am going to try to increase some more for that 10:30 a.m. time frame. Since it started going up before he even ate anything, I am thinking it is a basal rate adjustment not a carb. ration adjustment. I'll let you know how it goes.

It was nice to hear from you! How did you know I posted again? Do you periodically check this blog? I always am surprised when I haven't posted for awhile, and then someone finds me.

Jenny-

Boy, does this ever sound hormone-related. And definitely something you want to address with his basals...

Good luck!

Oh, and I knew you'd posted because I subscribe to your blog via a free service called Bloglines.
